gettin' my crafty on with a trench coat refashion

I saw this post and decided that I really wanted to get a new coat but I'm too cheap to pay 50 plus dollars on it. I've really been loving the ruffles and lace that has been taking over the fashion world and so I thought it was the perfect time to try this out.

I wish I would have taken a "before" picture but by the time I remembered I had already taken the scissors to it. Anyhow, picture mid calf, (on my 5'10" self... loooong coat) ripped lining and pathetic buttoned monstrosity. It fit cute though, a little fitted and cute cuffs on the sleeves. With a price tag of $12 how could I say no?

I went to the store and grabbed some new buttons and went home. First I tried repairing the lining but it was too far gone and I really didn't want to try and replace it so I decided to just go without and ripped it all out. Next I decided how long I wanted it. I decided I like jackets that go right below my hip so I cut it about two inches longer than I wanted the finished length. Then I took the extra fabric I had just cut off and cut myself a strip of fabric about 4 inches wide along the finished edge. That became my ruffle. I pinned it and sewed it a couple of times along the stitch line that was already there. Add a few buttons, finish the bottom and voila!!! I got myself a new coat that I think is pretty darn cute for less than twenty dollars and maybe two hours!

I'm absolutely loving it!!! A new coat for the new season!

  1. Ilike frugality, no matter what the season. That is a really cute coat. However, a lining wouldn't be that hard. I took one out and cut a pattern off it and put a new one back in. It was a coat I did for my hairdresser in Rupert. (pretty scarry since I had never done one.) It turned out just like new.Itook the price out in hairdo's.I was proud of myself.
